Safety glass breaks in a way that prevents human injuries and property damage. While ordinary glass usually shatters into very sharp shards, some types of safety glass breaks into small, blunt pieces instead. Other kinds of safety glass incorporate special films or plastics so the shards stick to the film and sharp slivers do not go flying. Building codes typically require safety glass in windows adjacent to doors, in sliding-glass doors or in situations where the windows sit a few inches above the floor.
